What is Menopause?

Menopause is the time when you stop having menstrual periods. It is considered complete when you have not had a period for one year.

Menopause is a natural biological transition that usually starts in your 40s or 50s with perimenopause, when ovulation becomes irregular.

The average age for menopause is 51, but some people experience an earlier onset due to genetics or an autoimmune disease. Menopause can also be triggered by treatments for cancer or ovarian surgeries.

Symptoms of Menopause

Some people experience few or no symptoms, but it is common to experience symptoms such as:

  • Irregular periods
  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Sleep problems
  • Mood changes
  • Vaginal dryness

During menopause, estrogen levels decrease, which can increase your risk of developing heart disease and osteoporosis.
