What are Movement Disorders?

Movement disorders refer to the many neurological conditions that cause problems with movement—either an increase or decrease in movement—such as:

  • Parkinson’s disease and related parkinsonian conditions (Dementia with Lewy Bodies, Multiple Systems Atrophy, and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy)
  • Tremor
  • Huntington’s disease and related conditions
  • Tic disorders, including Tourette’s syndrome
  • Dystonia
  • Myoclonus and other hyperkinetic conditions
  • Functional movement disorders
  • Gait disorders

UR Medicine's Treatments for Movement Disorders

Our Movement Disorders team has grown to meet the growing needs of our patients. We start with clinical consultations and neuropsychological testing services to diagnose your condition.

Our specialized treatment approaches including Deep Brain Stimulation, Botulinum toxin therapy, continuous levodopa infusion therapy, and other cutting-edge options. We also offer clinical services via telemedicine.

Our team combines all the needed experts for complete diagnosis and treatment, including board-certified adult neurologists, child neurologists with additional training in movement disorders, neuropalliative care specialists, neuropsychologists, nurses and nurse practitioners, and social workers.

We actively partner with clinical, education, and research partners of other divisions within the department of neurology, including the Palliative Care Division (to help patients deal with pain and the emotional side of illness) and the Child Neurology Division.

What Sets Us Apart?

Our team has received designation as a Center of Excellence from the Parkinson’s Foundation and Huntington’s Disease Society of America. We’re also a Tourette Association of America (TAA) Clinical Research Center of Excellence.

Our division runs a Spanish language neurology clinic, Clínica de Neurología, and we’re involved with community outreach efforts. We’re a leader in the development of supportive and palliative care for movement disorders, and our providers are committed to providing person-centered care for patients and families.

As founding members of the Parkinson Study Group and the Huntington Study Group, we continue to stay on the forefront of new developments. As researchers, our team members have published widely in journals and books while winning numerous awards and appointments to advisory boards.

Our experts have served as chair for several research grant review committee meetings for the Michael J. Fox Foundation (MJFF) for Parkinson's Disease Research. They have won the Oliver Sacks Award for Excellence, among many other distinctions.

We actively collaborate with other departments and centers of the University, including the Center for Health + Technology (CHeT), Psychiatry Department, and Neuroscience Department.
