Pregnancy Termination
Make Appointments & Get Care
Overview
Abortion refers to a pregnancy in the uterus that does not continue. These can be spontaneous (a miscarriage) or induced.
Induced abortion, or termination of pregnancy, is one of the most common gynecological procedures performed in the United States. By age 45, one in four people of childbearing age will have had an induced abortion.
People find themselves in need of abortion services for a wide variety of reasons. This is a personal decision between patients and their providers that we respect at UR Medicine.
Pregnancy termination is a safe and effective procedure. Statistically, it is 14 times safer than pregnancy itself.

UR Medicine provides compassionate and confidential access to medical and surgical abortions. Prior to the procedure, you will meet with our providers to discuss options and help determine the best path forward for you and your family.
First-Trimester Abortions
- First-trimester medical abortions are typically performed at less than 11 weeks of gestation. This involves taking the medications mifepristone and misoprostol, allowing you to experience the termination procedure in the comfort and privacy of your home. It involves passing the pregnancy tissue at home, similar to a miscarriage.
- First-trimester surgical abortions can be performed in the office or the hospital, depending on patient preference, weeks of gestation, and any medical conditions. Sometimes, pills are placed in the vagina or mouth to help prepare the cervix. This procedure is typically performed with a small, hand-held suction device. Pain control for these procedures is based on each person’s needs.
Second-Trimester Abortions
- Second-trimester surgical abortions are typically performed in the hospital. These procedures typically require cervical preparation with either medications or cervical dilators the day before the procedure. IV or general anesthesia is typically given for these procedures.
- Second-trimester medical abortions (or labor-induction terminations) are performed in the hospital. These are typically offered to patients who are terminating their pregnancies for severe fetal anomalies.
