Scoliosis
Make Appointments & Get Care
What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine. It is not due to poor posture. A spine affected by scoliosis shows a side-to-side curvature shaped like an “S” or “C,” and an x-ray is required to diagnose the condition.
The back bones (vertebrae) are rotated, making the person seem to have a bump on their back or to lean to one side.
UR Medicine's Treatments for Scoliosis
The UR Medicine Spine Center’s highly trained healthcare team offers the most thorough diagnostics and modern testing facilities, including:
- Ultra-low radiation-level specialized scoliosis x-rays (EOS system)
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the Spine
Treatment may include:
- Repeated exams, to determine if the spine is continuing to curve.
- Bracing. When the curve reaches a certain size, bracing has been shown to prevent further progression for some patients. Serial casting is a special adaptation of the bracing treatment that has been shown to correct scoliosis in infants.
- Surgery, which is recommended for larger curves that will affect the health of the patient in the future.
What Sets Us Apart?
The UR Medicine Spine Center provides nationally recognized and fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeons who specialize in complex scoliosis care, including the latest surgical techniques.
Our team has the longest history of treating conditions of the spine in the multi-county region. Our program continues to grow: now, more than 19,000 patients come to the UR Medicine Spine Center every year.
Our involvement in research and education means our patients get access to clinically effective treatments that use the newest technologies, including computer-guided surgery, minimal incision surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and physical therapy and rehabilitation.
We also offer the UR Medicine Schroth Therapy Program. Many scoliosis families are interested in using physical therapy to treat their child’s curvature, so we offer certified Schroth physical therapists if this is of interest to you. You, your doctor, and your therapists will work together to develop a care plan that complements your doctor's recommended treatment.
