Singing Voice Therapy

What is Singing Voice Therapy?

Singing voice therapy is voice rehabilitation that targets negative changes that affect a person's singing voice.

What is the Difference Between Speaking Voice Therapy and Singing Voice Therapy?

Both Speaking Voice Therapy and Singing Voice Therapy aim to restore the highest level of vocal performance possible. They both work on building skills to stop any voice problems from reoccurring.

Speaking Voice Therapy can be used to treat a variety of vocal problems and disorders.

Singing Voice Therapy, however, focuses solely on singing/performing voice and addresses issues with vocal range, endurance, and quality. Exercises are tailored to the specific performance style and goals of the individual.

UR Medicine's Approach

First, your provider will examine your larynx. Once we identify the cause of your voice problem, our experts will determine the best course of treatment.

Some individuals may also have changes in their speaking voice; in those cases, they may complete a course of speaking voice therapy first before starting singing voice rehabilitation.

If singing voice therapy is recommended, your therapy program may include:

  • Strengthening and re-balancing the muscles, joints, and ligaments used in voice production
  • Learning strategies for preserving your voice while meeting performance demands
  • Creating balanced and healthy patterns in the vocal subsystems, including breathing, voice production, and resonance

Singing voice therapy is a self-pay service.
