What are Sleep Disorders?
About 70 million people in the United States have a sleep disorder. If you’re struggling with sleep problems, you're not alone.
Sleep needs vary from person to person. But most healthy adults need about 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night. Problems with sleep can affect your quality of life, but they can also be dangerous. Studies have shown that lack of sleep can disrupt nearly every function of the body. And they can take many forms, including:
- Insomnia
- Sleep apnea
- Sleepwalking
- Bedwetting
- Nightmares
- Night terror
- Restless legs syndrome
- Snoring
- Narcolepsy
Sleep is a key part of good health. Getting enough sleep may help the body recover from illness and injury. Not getting enough sleep over a period of time is linked to health problems. They include obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. The mental benefits of sleep are also important. In a research survey, people who had trouble getting enough sleep had trouble doing tasks that use memory and learning.

A consultation at a UR Medicine Sleep Center site takes 30 minutes to an hour. If a sleep study (polysomnogram) is needed, our center has an extensive testing facility. We prioritize private, clean, comfortable bedrooms for testing.
Our Center also runs a behavioral sleep medicine program, where insomnia patients can work with a licensed mental health professional using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). This approach helps you change actions or thoughts that contribute to your sleeping difficulties, so you can develop healthy sleep patterns without using medications.
Our experts can help you develop an individualized, evidence-based treatment plan. Our specialists include:
- Pulmonologists
- Ear, nose, and throat specialists (otolaryngologists)
- Neurologists
- Mental health professionals
- Bariatric surgeons
- Dental specialists
Treatment Options
- CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) therapy, which delivers pressurized air through a small nose/face mask while you sleep
- CPAP alternatives such as the Inspire® upper airway implant, for patients who don’t have success with CPAP therapy

- Oral appliances for simple snoring and mild OSA
