Make Appointments & Get Care

Overview

UR Medicine Vascular Surgery provides comprehensive vascular care for patients across Western New York and the Finger Lakes Region with all stages and types of circulatory disease, from diagnosis and treatment to medical management.

Our vascular surgeons specialize in open, hybrid, and minimally invasive endovascular procedures to diagnose and treat aneurysms, blocked arteries, blood clots, varicose veins, as well as compromised blood flow to the brain, intestines, and kidneys. Treatments for vascular disease depend on the type, location, and severity of the condition.

We offer multidisciplinary care as we work with patients to understand the benefits and risks of each treatment option, while coordinating consultations with specialists including cardiac surgery, nephrology, cardiology, to provide a seamless experience for patients and their families.

UR Medicine's Approach

We are one of the world’s foremost centers for vascular surgery, offering treatment for the full range of arterial (artery), venous (vein) disorders. Our renowned vascular and endovascular surgeons offer hope to patients whose artery and vein conditions may threaten life and limb, helping them return to a good quality of life.

Our experienced team of specialists use open, hybrid and minimally invasive techniques to repair blood vessels and restore circulation, and has helped to pioneer many of the techniques now considered standards of care for aortic and vascular surgery. Our team strives to perform minimally invasive endovascular treatments whenever possible, thereby reducing pain, the length of hospital stay, and risk of infection. Our specialists are also highly skilled at traditional open surgery including open aortic surgery, bypass for peripheral arterial disease, and carotid endarterectomy.

UR Medicine’s advanced surgical facilities give patients access to minimally invasive (endovascular) therapeutic options like endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) and transcarotid artery stenting (TCAR).

Common Conditions We Treat

Evaluations & Diagnosis

We have an advanced, accredited noninvasive vascular laboratory. Here, we perform noninvasive evaluations and diagnoses of the veins and arteries in your arms, legs, head and stomach.

These tests are critical to an accurate diagnosis and, ultimately, the best plan of treatment. They include:

Doppler Testing. Color doppler testing is used to assess blood flow. The doppler device sends sound waves into your leg. The sound waves move through your leg tissue and a computer translates the sound waves into an image on a video screen. The image allows us to watch the blood flow through your veins and arteries, and make it possible for us to see plaque, lesions, narrowing, clots and obstructions.

Duplex/Doppler Ultrasound Exam. The duplex/doppler ultrasound test combines doppler and ultrasound technology to examine the blood flow in the major arteries and veins in the arms and legs with the use of ultrasound (high-frequency sound waves).

What Sets Us Apart?

We are recognized as a quality leader, earning a three-star (the highest) rating from the Vascular Quality Initiative. Our program remains at the forefront in the medical management of vascular patients, long-term follow-up strategy, and tracking the outcomes of endovascular aortic repair in the region. We are 1 of 15 sites piloting patient-reported outcomes in peripheral vascular disease, which allows us to better understand disease impact on patients. Our vein center remains the only formally accredited academic vein center in Western New York, demonstrating a commitment to quality and continuous improvement.

As far as research, the Cardiovascular Engineering Laboratory is actively developing hemodynamic models of acute aortic dissection and novel magnetic resonance aortic elastography techniques. Our outcomes research has focused on the relationship of surgeon volume on patient outcomes and societal healthcare value. These data are being used to derive metric nationally for surgeon safety and competency.

UR Vascular Surgery offers a robust and cohesive program for resident education and research. As one of the first institutions to embrace a dedicated vascular training program in 2006, we offer a unique opportunity for residents to learn the art and science of vascular surgery in a variety of training environments.
