Cognitive Communication
What are cognitive-communication disorders?
Cognitive-communication disorders involve a problem with communication that is related to a disruption in cognitive processes. Cognitive processes, include:
- Orientation
- Attention
- Perception
- Memory
- Reasoning / problem solving / constructional ability
- Planning / organization / sequencing
- Social behavior and emotional control
- Impulsivity and insight into deficits
Cognitive-communication disorders are typically caused by a traumatic brain injury (TBI), concussion / mild TBI, stroke, brain tumor, cancer treatment, hypoxic brain injury, viral infection, long COVID or progressive neurological diseases. These disorders can co-occur with language or speech impairments, and can impact:
- Speaking
- Listening
- Reading
- Writing
- Pragmatic / social skills
- Activities of daily living
- School/work performance.
Speech-Language Pathology Evaluation & Therapy
Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP) have specialty training in evaluating individuals cognitive-communication deficits. Most patients with these types of deficits are evaluated through the Integrative Cognitive Rehabilitation Program (hyperlink). For those who do not meet the ICRP inclusion criteria (hyperlink), an individual assessment with a Speech-Language Pathologist, will be completed. This assessment will evaluate:
- Attention
- Memory
- Executive functioning
- Language
- Visuospatial skills
Using this information, your SLP will identify your areas of cognitive strength and weakness, and develop a tailored therapy plan to help you meet your personal goals. A person-centered approach and focus on life participation will be used to maximize your communication and function across your daily environment.
