The newly renovated pharmacy will provide residents of this underserved area increased access to essential pharmacy services in a convenient location. Officials of the University and the City said the new location will provide an oasis in the pharmacy desert created by the closure of a commercial pharmacy at 670 Thurston Road in 2022, and plans announced last week to close another at 814 West Main Street.

“I’m extremely pleased that a new Highland Pharmacy has opened in the University’s Brooks Landing district to immediately help our neighbors by offering convenient access to needed prescriptions, over the counter medications, and health guidance,” said University of Rochester President Sarah C. Mangelsdorf. “The University is actively involved with community partners in the 19th Ward and the City of Rochester to better understand and address some of the 19th Ward’s more unique challenges, which include a shortage of pharmacy, food, and banking services. With recent closings of other pharmacies in the neighborhood, the University has been exploring ways to ensure residents have access to needed medications as part of the City’s Rochester Pharmacy Coalition.”

Mayor Malik Evans applauded the University for working to open the new location as quickly as possible.

“My team has worked tirelessly to identify and support community partners who can help fill the critical need for a pharmacy in Southwest Rochester,” said Mayor Malik D. Evans. “I am grateful to the Â鶹ÊÓƵ and Highland Hospital for answering this call by opening the Highland Pharmacy at Brooks Landing, and I am proud of our continued efforts in City Hall to support investments to provide the people of Southwest Rochester with equitable access to lifesaving, health-preserving pharmacy services. Working with partners who share our commitment to the health and wellbeing of all our residents moves us closer to creating a safe, equitable and prosperous Rochester by inspiring hope and delivering opportunity for everyone.”

The Brooks Landing Pharmacy offers a wide range of services, including:

  • Walk-in pickup of prescriptions for community members, regardless of provider or where they receive health care
  • Free delivery of prescriptions to any Monroe County address for residents who prefer at-home service
  • Ability to purchase many common over-the-counter medicines
  • Private spaces for customers to receive personalized care and consultations with UR Medicine pharmacists
  • On-site vaccine administration
  • UR Medicine patients receive the added benefit of fully integrated pharmacy care, where the pharmacist can see their complete health record and medication list to ensure prescriptions are fully aligned to the patient’s medical needs

The new pharmacy, operated by , previously served Rochester residents as part of the on Holland Street in the Upper Falls neighborhood. Recently, Jordan Health decided to operate its own pharmacy at the health center, which opened last week. While that transition was underway, Â鶹ÊÓƵand Highland made plans to move to the Brooks Landing location, which is convenient to residents of the 19th Ward and members of the University community who live on or near campus.

“Jordan Health is one of the many community partners we collaborate with to provide City residents convenient access to high-quality medical care and health-related services, including pharmacy care,” said Kathy Parrinello, CEO of Strong Memorial and Highland hospitals. “I’m pleased that through this latest collaboration we are able to restore pharmacy services for residents of the 19th Ward and other nearby neighborhoods.”

As part of the ongoing collaboration, the Highland Brooks Landing Pharmacy location will also serve patients who previously filled prescriptions at a commercial pharmacy inside Jordan’s Woodward Health Center, 480 Genesee Street, which closed earlier this year. Woodward is about a half a mile away from the Brooks Landing pharmacy.

“Residents in the South District need access to medicine and other necessities, and I’m thrilled that the University of Rochester is opening a new pharmacy that will help constituents in my district bridge the gap to the medicine and care they deserve,” City Council Vice President LaShay D. Harris (South District) said. “Following the loss of pharmacy options in the 19th ward in recent years, I’m proud to see one of our city’s great institutions is in alignment with our City's mission to create Safer Neighborhoods, Quality Housing and Equitable Access to Opportunity for all Rochesterians.”

Highland also operates the , 777 South Clinton Avenue, which provides the same services as the new Brooks Landing pharmacy to residents of the South Wedge and adjacent neighborhoods.
