Wilmot’s Dialogue Magazine: Progress in Lung and Breast Cancer, Community Outreach
Lung cancer weighs heavy in the Rochester region and Wilmot Cancer Institute has multi-pronged strategies to meet the challenge. Read about the data behind lung cancer cases in the region, early screening, advanced treatments, research — and a Victor resident’s inspiring story — all in the latest edition of Dialogue magazine.
Community outreach is another key priority at Wilmot, but it’s more than just events and marketing efforts.
Wilmot’s Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) office has a deeper mission in line with National Cancer Institute goals: to connect grassroots communities with Wilmot scientists and leaders, to reduce the burden of cancer, and to increase access to services, particularly in underserved areas.
Fun fact: COE has already guided nearly 16,000 uninsured and under-insured people to free cancer screening via a state-funded program. COE is Wilmot’s eyes and ears in the community. The COE is introduced on page 10 — but look for their activities regularly in Dialogue and on Wilmot’s social media channels.
Wilmot is also proud to have recruited a first-class surgeon and leader to manage the breast cancer service line. Anna Weiss, M.D, recently came to Rochester from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, and shares her vision (pages 2-3) for the breast program, which will continue to offer the best multidisciplinary cancer care in upstate New York.
