Dr. John Vorrasi Named Chair, EIOH Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
John S. Vorrasi, DDS, has been named chair, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department, Eastman Institute for Oral Health. The associate professor also serves as the department’s program director for its residency program.
In 2017, Dr. Vorrasi joined Eastman Institute for Oral Health as an assistant professor and has steadily increased his responsibilities ever since.
“Since he joined Eastman Institute, Dr. Vorrasi has consistently demonstrated his effective leadership,” said Eli Eliav, DMD, PhD, EIOH director and professor. “In his new role as chair, we’re confident he will build upon the existing strengths of the department and continue his successful track record with education, clinical excellence and research.”
Dr. Vorrasi’s research interests include orthognathic and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgery, as well as pain management. Two of his studies were recently published in Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology. One study compared stock and custom prosthetic TMJ replacements and the other explored the effectiveness of administering gabapentin before surgery to reduce pain and opioid usage following oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures.
Dr. Vorrasi received a coveted Geistlich Osteoscience Research grant in collaboration with the University of Delaware Department of Mechanical Engineering, to study TMJ and TMJ disc reconstruction using autogenous materials and hydrogel materials.
Frequently invited to speak at national meetings, Dr. Vorrasi recently presented with Dr. Junad Khan on TMD disease and treatment at the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery national meeting.
Dr. Vorrasi’s commitment to resident education is evidenced by his successful efforts to secure resident grants for professional development, arrange esteemed lecturers to visit, and help prepare residents for Board exams. In addition, Dr. Vorrasi serves on the 麻豆视频Patient Safety Council, and has participated in mission trips performing full scope head and neck surgeries. He serves as a Commission on Dental Education (CODA) Site Visitor and American Dental Association Integrated National Board Dental Exam content expert.
In 2013 he joined the OMFS program at Christiana Health Care System in Delaware. He served as director of Clinics, then as associate program director until 2014 before being named program director in 2015. He was a 2014 recipient of Christiana Care's Rising Star faculty award. He also served as associate director of research and simulation training there.
Dr. Vorrasi earned his certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Maryland, where he also completed a one-year internship. He is a diplomate of the American Board of OMFS, fellow of the American Association of OMFS, member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon dental honor society, and the American Society of TMJ Surgeons. He obtained his dental degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo, Cum Laude, in 2008.
