EIOH Resident Profile - Dr. Abdallah Michail

Dr. Abdallah Michail's favorite thing about Eastman Institute for Oral Health has been the diversity and the great friends he's made.

Q: Where are you from?
A: I am Jordanian, born and raised in the United Arab Emirates.

Q: What age did you know you wanted to be a dentist?
A: I knew I wanted to become a dentist when I was in high school. I had to present about the oral anatomy/biology in a biology class. Dentistry is not only about science, but it has an art component to it.

Q: Why did you pick EIOH?
A: Back in 2012/2013 I interviewed at EIOH. Life took a different path for me. After a long journey, I decided to apply again in 2019 and was accepted into the 3-year AEGD program. Now I am lucky to continue my journey in the Orthodontics Residency Program, EIOH opens doors to excel in one’s career. EIOH is an institute that gathers so much knowledge and talent under one roof.

Q: Most embarrassing moment?
A: One day, I was blasting music in my headphones and my sister walked in on me dancing and singing out loud. There is a video of that, and she threatens me with it in a funny way.

Q: What do you love about the Rochester area?
A: The landscape around Rochester and the Finger Lakes region is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever encountered. The parks in the area bring unique experiences, and they are a great place to go meditate, exercise and read.

Q: Favorite thing about EIOH?
A: The diversity and great friends I’ve made. In addition to the diversity and the variation in cultures, one thing we all share in common is dentistry. I enjoy learning from my faculty and co-residents.

Q: Describe yourself in three words.
A: Humble, a foodie and sarcastic.

Q: You’re having a bad day – what do you do to feel better?
A: In summer- Definitely go on a hike or long walks and listen to some music/songs. During winter I enjoy meeting a friend for coffee to play board games and just chat. Also, I enjoy plant shopping or taking care of my plants at home.

Q: Hobbies or talents?
A: Painting and scribbling from time to time. In the past I’ve enjoyed clay art.

Q: Why do you want to be an orthodontist?
A: Orthodontics is not just about enhancing smiles. It is a thinking game that challenges me. At the moment, I am building blocks in developing the knowledge about the field of orthodontics; it is an ocean of knowledge. Moreover, I admire how the field can be integrated into interdisciplinary care.

Q: Favorite place in Rochester?
A: Park- I like Channing H. Philbrick Park.

Restaurant- Sinbad-Park Ave.

Q: What is that one thing you learned in AEGD that you carry as an Ortho resident?
A: To grasp every single opportunity to learn.

Q: In what way did you EIOH experience allow you to go professionally?
A: Exposure and in-depth learning with different dentistry disciplines. Also, the tremendous exposure I had in research.

Q: What is the best advice you ever received?
A: To never say “I know” There is always information to be learned no matter how much I know.

Q: Who is your biggest role model in life?
A: My Mother. My mother was not only my role model, but for many other people as well.  She was so compassionate in her career, she always pushed me and my siblings to get the best education. She taught us to appreciate every single thing we earned and to be humble and kind to one another.
