Judith Baumhauer to Serve as Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs

Nov. 21, 2022

Judith Baumhauer, M.D., M.P.H., a long-time faculty leader, has been named senior associate dean for academic affairs, effective Dec. 1.

Her appointment, which followed a national search, is pending approval by the Provost’s office.

“Judy’s deep commitment to her colleagues, to Â鶹ÊÓƵand to those we serve has long been evident, whether through her groundbreaking work with patient-reported outcomes, her leadership in clinical trials or, most recently, her service as associate dean for Academic Affairs,” said SMD Dean and Â鶹ÊÓƵCEO Mark Taubman, M.D. “Her experience, institutional knowledge and track record of success make her an ideal person to fill this vital position and to ensure our Academic Affairs Office thrives in the years ahead. I extend my thanks to the search committee members for the time and effort they put into the process.”

Baumhauer, tenured professor of Orthopaedics, succeeds Jeffrey Lyness, M.D., who accepted a position as president and CEO of the Chicago-based American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology earlier this year.

As senior associate dean, Baumhauer will oversee faculty appointments and reappointments, along with the promotion and tenure processes. She’ll spearhead recruitment and onboarding of faculty leaders as well as professional development initiatives.

“I’m grateful to accept this role and excited by the opportunity to have a meaningful and positive impact on the growth and advancement of our outstanding faculty and staff within SMD,” said Baumhauer. “I look forward to both building on Dr. Lyness’ positive legacy and to bringing fresh ideas forward for faculty development and processes. As faculty, we are here to provide the best possible care to patients, to lead and mentor others, teach the physicians of the future and to undertake transformative research. The Office of Academic Affairs plays a key role in fostering the vitality that makes this possible, and it is a privilege to be chosen to lead it.”

Baumhauer has served as associate dean for Academic Affairs since July 1, with a focus on senior faculty development, such as promotions and tenure decisions for senior ranks, and the ad hoc and Steering committee processes that support those actions. She previously served as associate chair for Academic Affairs for Orthopaedics for over 10 years.

Baumhauer has published nearly 200 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters; her current research efforts focus on use of patient-reported outcome (PRO) assessments to measure and manage treatment options for patients. As medical director of Patient Reported Outcomes housed within the Quality Institute, she has led efforts to operationalize PRO collection as a part of clinical patient care throughout UR Medicine.

Baumhauer also has led the design and implementation of several multi-centered prospective clinical trials to bring new, clinically meaningful orthopaedic products through the FDA approval process and into widespread clinical use.

She was the first woman president of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS); and Eastern Orthopaedic Association. She is the immediate past president of the PROMIS Health Organization and is currently a trustee for the American Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

Baumhauer has won numerous awards for her research, clinical contributions and leadership efforts, including the 2012 Athena Award here in Rochester.  She received the 2022 Nicolas Andry Lifetime Achievement award for her work using patient reported outcome measures to improve patient care and the 2021 Women’s Leadership Career Impact Award by the American Foot and Ankle Society for her contributions to mentoring woman in the field of orthopaedic surgery.
