Judith Baumhauer to Serve as Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs
Judith Baumhauer, M.D., M.P.H., a long-time faculty leader, has been named senior associate dean for academic affairs, effective Dec. 1.
Her appointment, which followed a national search, is pending approval by the Provost’s office.

Baumhauer, tenured professor of Orthopaedics, succeeds Jeffrey Lyness, M.D., who accepted a position as president and CEO of the Chicago-based American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology earlier this year.
As senior associate dean, Baumhauer will oversee faculty appointments and reappointments, along with the promotion and tenure processes. She’ll spearhead recruitment and onboarding of faculty leaders as well as professional development initiatives.

Baumhauer has served as associate dean for Academic Affairs since July 1, with a focus on senior faculty development, such as promotions and tenure decisions for senior ranks, and the ad hoc and Steering committee processes that support those actions. She previously served as associate chair for Academic Affairs for Orthopaedics for over 10 years.
Baumhauer has published nearly 200 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters; her current research efforts focus on use of patient-reported outcome (PRO) assessments to measure and manage treatment options for patients. As medical director of Patient Reported Outcomes housed within the Quality Institute, she has led efforts to operationalize PRO collection as a part of clinical patient care throughout UR Medicine.
Baumhauer also has led the design and implementation of several multi-centered prospective clinical trials to bring new, clinically meaningful orthopaedic products through the FDA approval process and into widespread clinical use.
She was the first woman president of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS); and Eastern Orthopaedic Association. She is the immediate past president of the PROMIS Health Organization and is currently a trustee for the American Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
Baumhauer has won numerous awards for her research, clinical contributions and leadership efforts, including the 2012 Athena Award here in Rochester. She received the 2022 Nicolas Andry Lifetime Achievement award for her work using patient reported outcome measures to improve patient care and the 2021 Women’s Leadership Career Impact Award by the American Foot and Ankle Society for her contributions to mentoring woman in the field of orthopaedic surgery.
