Michael J. Apostolakos to Serve as Chief Medical Officer of Strong Memorial and Highland Hospitals

Michael J. Apostolakos, M.D., who has led Strong Memorial Hospital’s adult critical care program for 20 years, is being named chief medical officer of both Strong and Highland. Apostolakos will succeed Raymond Mayewski, M.D., who stepped down June 30.

“Like Dr. Mayewski, Dr. Apostolakos has devoted his entire career to the Â鶹ÊÓƵ, giving him a profound appreciation of our institution, its mission and vision,” said Michael Rotondo, M.D., F.A.C.S., CEO of the University of Rochester Medical Faculty Group. “As an accomplished doctor and administrator, he is ideally positioned to help lead us forward and to provide a strong voice for our physicians as we adapt to the changing health care landscape. It speaks well of our institution—and augurs well for its future—that we have someone like Dr. Apostolakos ready to step into, and excel in, this key role.”Reporting to Rotondo and Steven Goldstein, CEO of Strong and Highland, Apostolakos will oversee all matters related to medical staff affairs, clinical outcomes, patient safety, quality and satisfaction, and strategic initiatives that enhance clinical effectiveness.

He has a strong record of accomplishment in critical care to build on.“Dr. Apostolakos’ focus on improving quality has helped SMH thrive,” Goldstein said. “He led our successful effort to reduce central line infections and ventilator-associated pneumonias, implemented rapid response teams and championed the Wash-Glove-Wash and I Pledge campaigns to improve hand hygiene. As CMO, he will continue to advance clinical care, quality and safety, and he will expand his role as an advocate for our providers and the patients they care for.”

Apostolakos is known regionally as an expert on sepsis. He has served on numerous state and national committees, including a stint as president of the New York State Thoracic Society, and he has repeatedly been listed as one of the Best Doctors in America.In addition to his appointment as Director of Adult Critical Care, Apostolakos is a Professor of Medicine and Director of the Internal Medicine/Critical Care Medicine Fellowship. He chairs both the Critical Care Quality Council and the Resuscitation Council, and he serves as Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit and Medical Co-director of the Respiratory Care Department.

Apostolakos won the Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s Arthur W. Bauman Teaching Award twice and received its Emergency Medicine Resident Teaching Award three times. In 2004, he received a Â鶹ÊÓƵBoard Excellence Award.“This is a great place, with an outstanding complement of faculty, nurses and other professionals who provide top-level care to our patients,” Apostolakos said. “As CMO, I hope to build upon that foundation to further enhance both patient outcomes and the experience of the people who work here.”
