UR Medicine Restrictions Begin Due to Flu

Dec. 30, 2019

As our community, like much of the country, grapples with high levels of flu activity, UR Medicine is taking the following measures to limit its spread and best protect patients and staff at Strong Memorial Hospital, Highland Hospital, Golisano Children’s Hospital, and Wilmot Cancer Center:

-  No visitors under the age of 14 are permitted in the hospital. Exception: In the Maternity units only, healthy siblings of any age are permitted to visit healthy newborns.

-  No more than two visitors plus one care giver at any time for each patient.

-  People who are ill with flu-like symptoms (e.g., fever, cough, sore throat, body aches) are asked not to visit hospitalized patients at all.

“Flu is sometimes a serious illness in someone who’s healthy, but it can be especially dangerous for hospitalized patients with underlying illnesses,” said Paul Graman, M.D., hospital epidemiologist and clinical director of the Infectious Diseases Division at Strong.  “We strongly encourage people to wash their hands, get their flu shots, and to contact their doctor if they feel ill.”

These precautionary measures will go into effect at noon on today (Jan. 18.)

Family members who have questions about visiting their loved one at these UR Medicine hospitals should speak with the patient’s nurse or call Strong Memorial Hospital’s Infection Prevention office at (585) 275-7716.
