Â鶹ÊÓƵCEO and SMD Dean Responds to Supreme Court Affirmative Action Ruling

Jun. 30, 2023

We are deeply disheartened by yesterday’s Supreme Court decision on the validity of race or ethnicity criteria in university admissions. The potential effect on our nation’s higher education system is daunting and its implications could be particularly devastating for academic medicine and our education, patient care and research missions.

We and join in their efforts to analyze the ruling’s impacts, and remain steadfast in our belief that diversity is essential to our mission to improve the health of all whose lives we touch. We recognize the undeniable benefits of a diverse, inclusive community of learners, faculty and staff in serving those who turn to us for educational opportunities, biomedical advances, and equitable, high-quality health care.

We are bolstered by the as well as the deans of all New York state medical schools who will be providing information through the Associated Medical Schools of New York to inform our policies for the School of Medicine and Dentistry and School of Nursing. With this support, we will persevere without compromising our commitment to fulfilling all aspects of our mission.
