Â鶹ÊÓƵReinstates Indoor Face Mask Requirement Regardless of Vaccine Status

Aug. 9, 2021

Responding to the growing public health threat of the Delta variant, and the recent emergence of COVID-19 cases in the Rochester area, the University of Rochester is -- on the University’s campuses and properties, including the Â鶹ÊÓƵ (URMC).

The new policy, which goes into effect Tuesday, August 10, is in accordance with updated Monroe County and CDC recommendations for wearing face masks indoors. It is intended to be a temporary safety measure until COVID-19 transmission rates have declined sufficiently in Monroe County, and as COVID-19 case numbers remain low at the University and URMC.

While indoor masking has never stopped in the patient care areas at the Medical Center since early 2020, in late June 2021, the Medical Center began to loosen some restrictions for some parts of its campus, notably its academic, research and offsite administration areas, which allowed vaccinated individuals to go maskless in many common areas, meetings, eating spaces and shared offices.

With this move, the University and Â鶹ÊÓƵjoin other local organizations who have recently reinstated indoor masking.
