Curriculum
PGY-1 Year
Orthopaedic interns perform (12) 1 month-long Orthopaedic and non-orthopaedic rotations at Strong Memorial Hospital, Golisano Children’s Hospital, and Hight Hospital. They gain experience in the surgical and non-surgical care of both adult and pediatrics.

- Surgical Skills
- Trauma/Acute Care Surgery
- Vascular Surgery
- Orthopaedic interns are integrated into the Orthopaedic weekend resident call schedule during their orthopaedic rotations. Interns also complete a month-long Orthopaedic boot camp. They are excused from clinical duties during this time.
PGY-2 Year
The PGY-2 year provides the resident with 6 week rotations on the following services:
- The "Pit" (consult resident) AM
- The “Pit” (consult resident) PM
- Nightrider
- Trauma
- Hand/Upper Extremity
- Pediatrics
- Spine
- Foot and Ankle
It is during this year that a resident is asked to choose a faculty member as a mentor to provide guidance and direction throughout their residency.
PGY-3 Year
The PGY-3 year provides the resident with 6-week rotations on the following services:
- Adult Reconstruction
- Trauma
- Tumor
- Research
- Pediatrics
- Shoulder/Elbow
- Sports
- Highland Hospital General Orthopaedics
PGY-4 Year and 5 Curriculum
PGY 4 and PGY 5 years consist of 12-week blocks, with half of the class completing the blocks of Adult Reconstruction, Trauma, Pediatrics and Sports in their PGY 4 year while the other half of the class completes the blocks of Hand, Foot, Tumor/Shoulder, and Spine. The blocks not completed in PGY 4 year will be completed in PGY 5 year. A six week elective will be taken during the pediatric rotation.

PGY3: Arthroplasty Course
PGY4/5: AAOS Annual vs Board Review Course
Vacation time does not have to be used to attend the courses. 10 days of education time is allowed each year to cover time at courses and conference presentations.
Residents are encouraged to present papers at national meetings and receive departmental support to do so. Manuscripts, abstracts, and meetings must have departmental approval before residents schedule a presentation. Each paper may be presented at only one meeting.
