After the 2nd Year

The initial focus during this time is on developing the hypotheses and experimental approaches that will define the student's thesis research. Students should complete a Preliminary Exam during the spring semester of the of the 2nd year. The exam must be started before April 1st and be completed by June 1st of the summer between years 2 and 3. The thesis proposal must be written and the Qualifying Examination taken BEFORE October 1st of the fifth semester of graduate study (i.e., fall semester in year 3).
