The cover story features a Q&A with Jamie Flerlage, MD, an “Upstate Girl,” returning closer to home to serve as chief of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology as well as work within Wilmot’s Clinical Trials Office. She brings world-class expertise and leadership to cancer programs for children and young adults. In the article, readers not only get to know about her professional background, but also who she is as a person.

Keeping with the pediatric and young adult theme, the magazine also tells the story of a recent recruit , a cancer survivor who joined the School of Nursing and is part of Wilmot’s Cancer Prevention and Control (CPC) research program. Ghazal’s work focuses on cancer care delivery for adolescents and young adults.

Readers will also get a glimpse into the inspirational story of Sarah Moore, who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her early twenties and faced many hurdles. She and her family were so grateful for her extraordinary care and her team at Wilmot that they donated $50,000 at the 2023 Discovery Ball. Her story of perseverance and giving back to help others is uplifting. 

In looking toward a new year, many people like to consider ways to change their lifestyles and be healthier. For that, Pittsford resident Jack Pilarski may be of help. He quit smoking after 60 years thanks to support from Wilmot’s Quit Center, and shares his experience.
